So our little group has been experimenting with making art together on Aggie.io, a collaborative art making platform. We find it very soothing and cathartic to just hang out together and draw, even when we are drawing about difficult stuff. We fire up some contemplative music and work pretty much in silence.
So much of therapy involves talking about our problems. We are told constantly that 'it helps to talk about it', and of course it does. It's never a good idea to bottle things up. At the same time, expressing our feelings in words is not the only way to release our feelings, and some folks are not that into words. And it can be hard to find the right words, and even harder to speak them aloud. How will people respond? Sometimes they don't know what to say. Sometimes they are sad that you are sad and they try to talk you out of your feelings.
When we draw together, we don't judge each other's feelings, and we don't try to make them go away. We just put them out there and let the images speak.
